MTL_Inspet_Man Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 I'm inspecting a new construction and the customer called in a panic today. It appears that the framer messed up and the roughing for the bathroom door is to small so the solution is to install a narrower one. what is the minimum door with allowed by code for a bathroom? thx
Jim Katen Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 The IRC has no minimum size for a door to a bathroom. There isn't even a requirement that there be a door to a bathroom. Heck, bathrooms aren't even considered habitable spaces. I'm presently installing a 24" wide door in a little half bath that I'm building in my basement. I'm doing it because I found a bitchin' cool wood panel door for $5 at a yard sale, and I had to put it somewhere. That's a *small* door. But heck, it'll be used 10 times a year. Which bathroom is it? Hall, master, or half? How small is the door that they're proposing to put in? How tough would it be to re-frame the wall? - Jim Katen, Oregon
Brad Manor Posted June 16, 2010 Report Posted June 16, 2010 Ontario Building Code says a Bathroom/Water Closet Room/Shower Room door shall be at least 610mm (24") wide. Not sure what it has to be in Montreal. -B
MTL_Inspet_Man Posted June 16, 2010 Author Report Posted June 16, 2010 It is a cottage and it is the master bath on the upper floor I too assumed that 24" would be fine since there are no appliances i.e. washer / dryer It looks like it will end up as a 28" in lieu of a 30" thx
