bluefish1111 Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 I'm thinking about doing and egress window in my basement that's easy to step into, maybe 24" off the ground. This, of course, will put a large hole in my yard. What are the safety regulations in regards to the hole? Do I need stairs? I would guess max depth at 44" if no steps. Do I need steps? Thx. bluefish111
hausdok Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 Hi, Floor to opening has to be no more than 44inches and the window well has to be at least 36-inches by 36-inches. If the window well is more than 44" deep, you need a ladder permanently affixed. Here are some sites. Some have the codes: http://www.wellcraftwells.com/ http://www.ehow.com/way_5344203_diy-bas ... wells.html http://www.bestchoiceegresswindows.com/ ... wwells.htm http://www.redi-exit.com/window-well-style-size.html http://www.wellcraftwells.com/pdf/5600_specs.pdf ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Tom Raymond Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 Mike beat me to it, but check out the links here: http://www.bing.com/search?q=bilco+scap ... NH14&qs=AS. If you end up with a deep window well you will also need to consider gaurd rails or a cover. If you choose the latter, make sure it is an approved cover or you could be creating a condition as dangerous as ignoring the egress opening altogether. Tom
