John Dirks Jr Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 This corrosion was only in the bottom portion of the panel. There was a very poor gutter downspout arrangement just above this panel on the exterior. This is also the northwest wall which gets most of the wind driven rain. Could moisture seeping through the block wall cause this corrosion? Is that the most likely cause here? Click to Enlarge 49.99 KB Click to Enlarge 22.02 KB
plummen Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 Sounds logical to me,that definately calls for replacement [:-bigeyes

Bill Kibbel Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 That's why they mount 'em on plywood here (well, most of 'em). The ones that are installed directly on the foundation usually look like that.
MTL_Inspet_Man Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 Hi Bill I thought mounting them on some sort of plywood and not directly to a foundation wall was a code requirement. always see them done this way in Quebec cheers
Jim Morrison Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 It's hard to tell from a partial shot, but I would expect corrosion from condensation to be pervasive, not just heavy on the bottom.
Ben H Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 It's hard to tell from a partial shot, but I would expect corrosion from condensation to be pervasive, not just heavy on the bottom. I was thinking the same thing, just not as well written.[]
Tom Raymond Posted May 24, 2010 Report Posted May 24, 2010 There is rust all over the inside of that panel. I can easily imagine enough condensation forming that it runs down and pools at the bottom. I bet the water heater and HVAC were rusty too. Tom
John Dirks Jr Posted May 25, 2010 Author Report Posted May 25, 2010 Here's the whole panel. I looked close at the SEC to see if water was comming in there but could not conclude anything. Click to Enlarge 34.8 KB
MTL_Inspet_Man Posted May 25, 2010 Report Posted May 25, 2010 If you're trying to determine if it's coming from the SEC then did yiu check the weatherhood outside to see if it is not broken? You could be getting wind driven rain down the conduit. Just a guess
John Dirks Jr Posted May 26, 2010 Author Report Posted May 26, 2010 See the gutter downspout extension? Its the perforated kind that gets used as drain tile. Wrong material for a downspout extension. Screw mounting holes drilled in the block will make the water intrusion path that much easier. Click to Enlarge 45.22 KB Click to Enlarge 60.63 KB
