Brandon Whitmore Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 I don't think that PEX is supposed to be hooked up directly to a water heater, and have never seen it. I'd have to read the PEX manufacturers installation instructions to see what the have to say about it.

gtblum Posted May 13, 2010 Author Report Posted May 13, 2010 Found it 604.11.2 Water Heater Connections. PEX shall not be installed within the first 18 inches (457 mm) of piping connected to a water heater.
MTL_Inspet_Man Posted May 14, 2010 Report Posted May 14, 2010 If it's an electric water heater then its ok Looks like the installer invented some kind of union joint to make installation and removal easier sure got a lot of crimps for such a short run

I copied and pasted that code reference. Nothing mentioned about gas or electric.
charlieb Posted May 15, 2010 Report Posted May 15, 2010 The manufacturer's association design guide (PPFA) does not allow connecting PEX to a WH. In their design guide, Zurn specifically states their product may be connected directly to an electric water heater.
