JohnC Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 I was wondering if anyone could tell me the type of insulation this is. I can't recall ever seeing this type before. The house was constructed in 1930. Thanks, John Callan Click to Enlarge 40.68 KB
hausdok Posted March 8, 2010 Report Posted March 8, 2010 Hi, It looks like Silva Wool (wood insulation) in batt form. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
msteger Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 Is it me or does it look either like a huge amount of mold on the underside of the roof (behind where the insulation is pulled away) or possibly some fire damage?
mgbinspect Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 Some of the old batt fiberglass insulations were adhered to the paper backing with something that looked a bit like tar - bitumen based Im guessing. And, some of those paper backings were jet black. I've see a lot of both.
hausdok Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 Hi, Yes, it's not mold; on the vapor barrier side of paper-faced insulation the paper is normally coated on the insulation side with a thin layer of asphalt that increases the paper's ability to inhibit vapor diffusion through the batting. That's what I see there. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
JohnC Posted March 18, 2010 Author Report Posted March 18, 2010 It was not mold. It was caused from the back paper side of the old batt and it did look a little like tar residue. John Callan
