I was wondering if anyone could tell me the type of insulation this is. I can't recall ever seeing this type before. The house was constructed in 1930.

Thanks,

Is it me or does it look either like a huge amount of mold on the underside of the roof (behind where the insulation is pulled away) or possibly some fire damage?

Some of the old batt fiberglass insulations were adhered to the paper backing with something that looked a bit like tar - bitumen based Im guessing. And, some of those paper backings were jet black. I've see a lot of both.

Hi,

Yes, it's not mold; on the vapor barrier side of paper-faced insulation the paper is normally coated on the insulation side with a thin layer of asphalt that increases the paper's ability to inhibit vapor diffusion through the batting. That's what I see there.
