On top of it all, that's a hollow 8x8x16 serving as a beam bearing surface. It really ought to be a solid block. Always give a hollow block on top of a pier a good rap to be certain, at the very least, that it's core-filled with mortar.

These pictures demonstrate why I like my job so much...you never know what you're going to see. It gets me up in the am. Last inspection had the deadbolt on the front entrance door replaced with another doorknob. Takes two hands to open the door, one on each doorknob.

Here are a couple of snaps from an inspection a few years back. Same house. 1920's that had been converted into 3 apartments.
