Seems that I remember reading somewhere that the relief valve on a steam boiler should always be installed vertically and not horizonatally. I can't find anything to verify this.

• ASME, but it's not enforced for boilers that operate under 15psi and in buildings with less than 4 dwelling units.
• Some boiler manufacturers' instructions (including some circulating hot water boilers) require the "spindle" of the relief valve to be vertical.
• Manufacturers' installation instructions for SOME relief valves.
