John Dirks Jr Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 Have any of you ever tried AVG free virus protection software? I was running McAfee and it was causing problems. If I un-installed McAfee things would improve dramatically. Then, when I put it back it would mess up again. I dumped McAfee and installed AVG free. Moving like greased lightning now.
Robert Jones Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 I have used it before and it worked ok. Check out Comodo for a good, free, firewall.
randynavarro Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 I've used AVG free for a while - no problems. I upgraded on one of my machines to the full pay version. It actually glitches more frequently than the free version.
Acorn Home Posted September 6, 2009 Report Posted September 6, 2009 Both McAfee and Norton are real slow. They are virus themselves in my opinion. I have been using AVG free for a while now and I seems to work very well. You can set it to scan at whatever intervals and time of the day you want. Also, try running CCLEANER once in a while.... works wonders. Link here http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
John Dirks Jr Posted September 7, 2009 Author Report Posted September 7, 2009 Im trying Comodo now. So far, I like it. I like the real time info it can give you on activity. With the McAfee, I never knew what was happening. I've been runnng CCleaner for a year now. It too is a nice free utility. I also run WinPatrol to keep the start menu clean of unwanted program startups. My machine is now moving way faster with AVG Virus Scan and Comodo Firewall than it was with McAfee Security Center.
kurt Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 I use AVG. Have for years. I run one computer (not tied to the network) without any protection whatsoever. Works fine. Makes me think all that stuff is crap.
Acorn Home Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 I also run WinPatrol to keep the start menu clean of unwanted program startups. No need. Ccleaner will take care of that as well...
John Dirks Jr Posted September 7, 2009 Author Report Posted September 7, 2009 I also run WinPatrol to keep the start menu clean of unwanted program startups. No need. Ccleaner will take care of that as well... I know. I had a hold of WinPatrol first and just havn't let it go. Ever try AML Registry Cleaner? It's weird. I run the Ccleaner registry tool and it might find a few things. Right after that I run the AML one and it finds a bunch more stuff. http://www.amltools.com/
inspector57 Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 Use Kaspersky. It is worth the price. My computer guy swears by it. I was running several different programs to try and clean up my system that was infected with adware, spyware, etc. while using other software. A complete system scan found and removed several items that were overlooked by the other software. I routinely get notified of stuff sent to me by others using some of the more well known products.
dcmeagle Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 I use AVG Free on my desktops and their commercial version of my servers. Uses a LOT less resources than McAfee or Norton AV do.
