Chad Fabry Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 I live in cobblestone central and there are hundreds in my area. A couple weeks ago I had a job in Plattsburgh and on the 334.9 mile drive I passed this place and snapped a picture to share. I've never seen anything like it before. Click to Enlarge 71.57 KB
hausdok Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Kewl! It kinda looks like a remuddled bungalow. 162 miles one way? Phew! That would have been a $240 distance surcharge if I'd done it. Are there really so few inspectors in USNY? OT - OF!!! M.

Are there really so few inspectors in USNY? 2x162 = 324, not 334. It was 334 miles one way. I was working but not inspecting. My son, my nephew and I did a tear off and re-roof for a friend. I should probably re-think my "anything for a buck" philosophy.
Bain Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 What's supporting the brick in the front eave? They're directly above the lower portion of the entablature, aren't they? Or is my perspective skewed (Or better yet, skrewed.)?
kurt Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 "Honesty in Architecture" doesn't apply here. I suppose the idea of a column composed of pebbles having no architectural basis didn't really enter the individuals head when they were building those things.

I thought it was brick till I enlarged the photo.
kurt Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 The pebble gable end is a little bizarre too. It's the beauty of American building; anyone can do anything they want, so they do.

So, if I've got it right, that's 668 round trip. Wow, for me, that'd be a distance surcharge of $990 and way too much saddle time; my back'd be a mess by the time I got there. I'd probably tell 'em to fly me down, put me up in a hotel and buy all of the meals and pay all transport to and from the airport before I'd go that far for a job - any job. You've got some stones there Mr. Fabry. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
Tom Raymond Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 I've seen lots of pebble course work like that in rural communities, especially in well established amish areas. There are always some greek details around the front entry and windows, with simpler detailing on the sides. I've never seen one quite like that. Chad I've gotta agree with Mike, I'd be sore after the drive let alone after the roof gig. Tom
Richard Saunders Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 Looks like tile they sell at Home Depot
