tnpappas Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 At least half of the outlets are open ground 3-slot outlets. This pictures below are of the wiring in the attic. What is this wiring called? Looking for wording about the danger of open ground 3-slot outlets. Should these outlets be protected by a GFCI breaker or outlet, and labled no ground? Brandon Whitmore Posted July 23, 2009 Report Posted July 23, 2009 The wiring is cloth sheathed Romex. Open grounded 3 prong receptacles either need to be properly grounded, GFCI protected, or replaced with 2 prong receptacles.
MTL_Inspet_Man Posted July 24, 2009 Report Posted July 24, 2009 Looks like cloth sheathed Romex Typical in older homes. This hose may originally have had 2 prong outlets. They may have been swappped for more modern 3 prongs. They may have bonede the outlets using the ground wire to the electrical box but there probably is no real ground to speak of. Did u pull any outlets and take a pic?
