Robert Jones Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 I came across these 4 metal rods today. The home was built in 2002 with the basement just recently finished. The rods go from the slab floor through the installed drywall(ceiling). They are flexible. Thanks, Click to Enlarge 21.16 KB Click to Enlarge 24.56 KB
Jim Katen Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 They look like tie-down rods that got put in the wrong place. Or maybe they're in the right place and someone put the walls in the wrong place. - Jim Katen, Oregon
Richard Moore Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 Rob says they are flexible and the lighting pattern when blown up would suggest some type of armored flex rather than threaded rod. WAG: I wonder if it might be PEX inside the flex for a hydronic radiant heat system for the slab that was totally screwed up in the planning stage?
davidlord Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 Looks like threaded rod (Simpson Strong Tie) that you would normally see in the wall cavity.
Richard Moore Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 Looks like threaded rod (Simpson Strong Tie) that you would normally see in the wall cavity. You and Jim K are probably right. I start seeing and/or imagining weird stuff in the middle of the night. [:-bigeyes

Robert Jones Posted June 2, 2009 Author Report Posted June 2, 2009 Morning guys, They were definitely threaded rods. "Flexible", might be a abd choice of words, but they weren't really secured to anything. The basement was just recently finished. Thanks,
hmiller Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 Threaded rods are typically used as tie downs, and that is what these appear to be for.... As someone mentioned before, the wall was probably intended to be placed in line with these rods. These are normally concealed within the wall voids. Maybe someone planned on framing in a hall closet, which would also effectively conceal these? That is what I would do....... Of course a sawzall rod-ectomy came to mind....but you did not hear that from me....
Robert Jones Posted June 2, 2009 Author Report Posted June 2, 2009 Makes sense. Thanks everyone for the responses.
Jim Baird Posted June 2, 2009 Report Posted June 2, 2009 This must be one of Dick Cheney's "black sites" where "enhanced interrogation techniques" or EIT's were conducted.

gtblum Posted June 3, 2009 Report Posted June 3, 2009 Click to Enlarge 21.16 KB Click to Enlarge 24.56 KB What I don't understand about this is the "why would you? factor." It's obvious by the mud on the painted areas that this wall was phase II or an afterthought. Then again, it's obvious by the number of screws used, and the fact that they'll have to sand off a half a bucket of mud before the finish coat that maybe, whoever did it,was in over their head.
darinr Posted June 16, 2009 Report Posted June 16, 2009 whoever did it,was in over their head. What a mess. Weekend warriors no doubt.
