I was doing an inspection today and the gas water heater vent pipe from the stack only had one screw. I think there should be three but I'm unable to locate anything that confirms (Indiana).

I have not seen anything specific from the major manufacturers, i.e. Simpson, Amerivent, Metal-Fab, et al. Though three seems the optimal number, I suppose that two would suffice for the minimalists.

Hi,

How about:

2003 IRC

G2427.10.7 (503.10.7) Joints. Joints between sections of connector piping and connections to flue collars and hood outlets shall be fastened by one of the following methods:

1. Sheet metal screws.

2. Vent connectors of listed vent material assembled and connected to flue collars or draft hood outlets in accordance with the manufacturers' instructions.

3. Other approved means.

My old CodeCheck West that was based on the 2000 IRC has.

Sheet-metal screws at connection to vent (IRC 2426.10.7/UMC 815.1.9((3))).

ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!!

If it has a hole for a screw then my theory has always been that it should have a screw in it. Kind of like a joist hanger, if it has a hole for a nail it needs to have a nail in that hole!

If it's B-vent material, then it needs no screws. If it's single-wall material, then it needs three screws per Mike's cite.

I will try to find the name of the type but there is a B vent that has a ring that slides down to hold the connection together that has to have screws in it.

That's a new one to me. I'd be grateful if you could find it, Phillip.

BTW, that new picture is way too respectable looking.

Well Jim,

I guess I fell into the hear say of the supply house that I bought the b vent from. They told us that it needed screws to may sure it did not pop loose.

Here is the installment guide of the type pipe I was talking about.

Thanks. I didn't have a set of Hart & Cooley B-vent instructions in my files.

Is the billboard for real? I always figured that they'd cost way too much to be worthwhile.

How long have you had it up and what's the response like?

The bill board is for real. It is an electronic billboard.

It shows my add for 8 seconds 3 times a hour 24 hours a day.

It cost is $50 a week. It is part of a deal the Realtor Assoc has with the sign folks. That is why their logo is on my add.

It is located at the bridge where you cross from the city of Northport to down town Tuscaloosa. A very high traffic area.

I am on my second week so I don't know yet if it s doing any good.

Very cool Phillip. When times get hard spend even more on advertising.

I extend props to whomever came up with the text on the billboard. That's pretty good ad copy, if you ask me.

WJ

Agreed. Phillip's picture, the copy, and the logo all work well together. Nice ad.

This is just to let you know how the billboard turned out.

I had folks tell me that they seen me on it but nobody I did an inspection for said any thing about the billboard.

If people saw it and recognized you, then it was a success. It's all about name recognition.
