Robert Jones Posted May 7, 2009 Report Posted May 7, 2009 Had a walkthrough today with an investor friend an came across this setup which I have never seen before. Can someone shed some light on this for me please. On the right is a Royall Solid fuel fired furnace, I am guessing that was being used as a backup source? On the left, it looks to me to be a basic electric heater, however, there is also a Burnham oil fired boiler installed and 2 copper lines feed the lower section. The home was in the middle of a major remodel which was not completed. I hope that is enough information for someone to set me straight. Click to Enlarge 50.41 KB

If there are copper lines going from the boiler to the air handler in the picture, you might have a hydro-air unit. If so, I'll bet that they intended to use the wood furnace for most of their heating but when they didn't feel like messing with wood, they could use the boiler to heat water and circulate it through a coil in the air handler -- kind of like the heater in your car. Just a guess. . . - Jim Katen, Oregon
Robert Jones Posted May 7, 2009 Author Report Posted May 7, 2009 Jim, That makes sense. The boiler is located off to the left of the picture I have posted. There were 2 copper lines that went into the bottom of the air handler and 2 lines that went into the crawl space and came out in the laundry room where there is a location for a water heater. The water heater was not installed and there was not a thermostat installed. After reading both manufacturer's websites last night, this makes sense. Not a real common set up around here, so had me thrown a bit. Thanks for your reply.
