Konrad Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 I know this has been discussed before, apologies for being redundant. [:-boggled] Can someone refresh my memory regarding requirements for the triangle-shaped opening that is formed at the stair tread and the bottom of the railing above it?
Gerry Beaumont Posted July 20, 2004 Report Posted July 20, 2004 Hi Konrad, I don't have the code right in front of me, but nothing larger that a 6 inch sphere should be able to pass through that gap. regards Gerry
Gerry Beaumont Posted July 21, 2004 Report Posted July 21, 2004 Hi to all, Not to be out done by a mere Ashi education chair (sorry Scott, could not resist) LOL 312.2 Guard opening limitations. Required guards on open sides of stairways, raised floor areas, balconies and porches shall have intermediate rails or ornamental closures which do not allow passage of a sphere 4 inches (102mm) or more in diameter. Exceptions: 1. The triangular openings formed by the riser, tread and bottom rail of a guard at the open side of a stairway are permitted to be of such a size that a sphere 6 inches (152 mm) cannot pass through. 2. Openings for required guards on the sides of stair treads shall not allow a sphere 4 3/8 inches (107 mm) to pass through. Regards Gerry
Scottpat Posted July 21, 2004 Report Posted July 21, 2004 I thought 312 dealt with landings. Oh well if you use 316.2 I guess you could cover the loose fill insulation above the stairs in the attic![:-spin]
Mike Keady Posted July 21, 2004 Report Posted July 21, 2004 This is a good visual to stairs and railings. A couple of mistakes that you will notice! Download Attachment: VODGIRC2000.pdf 1077.48 KB Good to show clients. Mike Keady
