elgato Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 I found a kitchen sink with no trap. Looked in the basement an found one on the sink drain line. But, there is a straight run of almost 8'. This seems wrong, but I can't find a reference for the maximum allowed distance between a drain and it's trap. Can someone help me out? Thanks. Download Attachment: Blades 047.jpg 863.91 KB

Download Attachment: Blades 047.jpg 863.91 KB The trap must be in the same room as the fixture. The only exception I know of is the trap for a wash machine, which can be below the floor.(of course showers and tubs)
Jeremy Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 I think the reference you are looking for is IRC P3201.6
Jerry Lozier Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 I couldn't get you pic to open, there may be exceptions Rule of thumb I use is , trap in same room vertical distance from fixture outlet to trap weir is max of 24" so velocity won't siphon trap Horiz run should not be greater than 30" cc, on longer runs flow may not have enough velocity to drain
KGarten Posted March 30, 2009 Report Posted March 30, 2009 IPC section 1002.1 says what Jerry said about 24" max vertical distance from fixture outlet to trap weir. The commentary of the code mentions the self siphoning by velocity and also bacteria growth on longer lengths of pipe causing odors.
hausdok Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 Jerry, Save your picture as a JPEG file, reduce it so that it's less than 200 Mb and then rename it so there aren't any gaps or special symbols in the name. Then post it using the "post a visible picture" choice below the composition box. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
Jim Katen Posted March 31, 2009 Report Posted March 31, 2009 The trap must be in the same room as the fixture. The only exception I know of is the trap for a wash machine, which can be below the floor.(of course showers and tubs) What about bathtubs & showers? - Jim Katen, Oregon

Distance restrictions laid out in IRC P3201.6 would still apply.
elgato Posted April 2, 2009 Author Report Posted April 2, 2009 Thanks for the advice on posting images, as well as the excellent references on my original question.
