Brandon Whitmore Posted March 8, 2009 Report Posted March 8, 2009 I can't think of the name of this construction detail-- this rounded dormer (roof side of a barrel vault). I know I've read the name of it on this site.......... What is it? The metal roof does not appear to be properly detailed or flashed to me. The roofing just continues down under the roofing and acts as the flashing. It looks to me like water can just seep right down into the sheathing. Also, the screws are putting holes through the flashing (it only sticks out about 3" onto the roof sheathing if that). I would think this area would at least be a good candidate for ice/ water shield. What do y'all think.......... Click to Enlarge 53.25 KB Click to Enlarge 34.83 KB Click to Enlarge 45.45 KB
hausdok Posted March 8, 2009 Report Posted March 8, 2009 Someone's modern version of an eyebrow dormer. That should extend at least 18" out from that sucker or have some ice and weather shield installed out to about 18inches around dthe perimeter. OT - OF!!! M.
Brandon Whitmore Posted March 8, 2009 Author Report Posted March 8, 2009 I swear someone like Bill had some fancy name for it. I was surprised to see roof sheathing that looked pristine. The pic is taken near the upper side though............ (no visible leaks inside yet).
Bill Kibbel Posted March 8, 2009 Report Posted March 8, 2009 It's a hooded dormer. Way up North they're sometimes called bonneted dormers. An eyebrow dormer is shaped, well - like an eyebrow. Click to Enlarge 10.25 KB
Brandon Whitmore Posted March 8, 2009 Author Report Posted March 8, 2009 Thanks Bill, I think it was "bonneted dormer" I have heard/ read somewhere.
Mike Lamb Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 I found an article in JLC calling it a "curved-top dormer." The author was from Bloomington, IL.
waynesoper Posted September 7, 2009 Report Posted September 7, 2009 that's a BEER barrel dormer with Beer being the keyword in the installation process
