Inspectorjoe Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 Does anyone know what this blue stuff on the coil is? It's like a thin coat of paint. I don't have a closeup picture. It's a Carrier and the data plate is missing, but it looks to be a good 20 years old. Being A/C only, it was way too cold today to operate the system. The outside unit was wrapped in a tarp. The buyer said it wasn't covered when he saw it a week ago. I normally don't uncover them, but that made me a bit suspicious. Click to View 57.77 KB Click to View 91.18 KB
energy star Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 it was an anti corrosive spray that was sold.
Bill Kibbel Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 It's for units exposed to salty ocean air and acidic environments. I see them on industrial systems and it's standard on some residential split-ductless systems. It's surprising to see it on that installation (although a crappy application). Maybe they had a problem with the dog peein' on it.
Inspectorjoe Posted December 30, 2008 Author Report Posted December 30, 2008 I don't think it was applied because of a dog, because the fins weren't corroded or deteriorated at all. Thanks guys.
Terence McCann Posted December 30, 2008 Report Posted December 30, 2008 I've seen quite a few condensing units that the owners dog(s) have turned into a hydrant. The urine will strip away the fins leaving bare copper tubing behind. Amazing how corrosive urine is to the aluminum fins.
