palmettoinspect Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 I did a new construction home here in Johns Island SC. I was under the impression that a drain pan was required to be fitted under the washer machine and plumbed to the outside if the machine was installed on the second floor. Does anyone know if this is true? Every other new construction home also had this. Thanks Kiel

Alas, it isn't required by any code that I'm familiar with. - Jim Katen, Oregon
Jeff Remas Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 Quality builders will install it that way but there is no requirement that I am aware of. Call it a water heater and yes there is one required. Check with the local enforcement agency to see if they have any codes that would require it.
Jim Katen Posted December 29, 2008 Report Posted December 29, 2008 BTW, I've been recommending the pans that extend up the wall behind the washer to catch the spray from split hoses. You can find them here: http://www.floodsaver.com/ - Jim Katen, Oregon
palmettoinspect Posted December 29, 2008 Author Report Posted December 29, 2008 Thanks guys I told the buyer that there is no IRC or UPC code however most municipalites require a drain pan and most of the time its the city inspectors decision. Thanks Kiel
