gtblum Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 This is a basement sump pump discharge pipe. Other than the fact that it's ugly and should be buried, is there anything that's just way wrong with this? Image Insert: 70.79 KB Image Insert: 101.41 KB
Neal Lewis Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 It's likely to freeze. I would just discharge the water under the deck into some stone, unless it's pumping alot of water.
Mike Lamb Posted September 21, 2008 Report Posted September 21, 2008 It does not have to be underground. And if it's pitched OK, why would it freeze? Anyway, it looks OK to me. Yes, it's ugly.

Besides the fact that it will add to the likelihood of pressure from frozen soil next to the foundation that water is liable to end up right back under the basement floor again and the pump will run forever. MTL_Inspet_Man Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 except for the fact it may freeze.. is about it need to mention in report make sure there is no trip hazard over the pipe where it exits past deck as uit runs along ground. One couls always give it more slope and lei ti go underground at some point
gtblum Posted September 22, 2008 Author Report Posted September 22, 2008 I wouldn't do that in Oswego, NY. That is the first time I've ever heard anyone say that! What do you think about a french drain? The slope You see in the pic is real close to what it is. Thanks guys.
hausdok Posted September 22, 2008 Report Posted September 22, 2008 Hi, That depends on what your version of a "French drain" is and where you plan to place it. However, if they're already getting water in the basement you sure as s*** don't want to be discharging that pump anywhere close to that basement; get it well clear. Frankly, I don't understand why any home that's been properly built would ever have water in the basement. My old man built homes in NYS for nearly 60 years and put in hundreds of the damned things and none of them ever had any flooding issues. OT - OF!!! M.
