Fire Sprinklers?

I believe these are covers for sprinkler heads. Can anyone fill me in as to how they operate? Should they be painted?

There is a 'melt-link' on the cover. When it gets to a certain temperature (don't quote this, usually about 95 degrees I think), the link melts and the cover falls down.

Usually, it'll state right on the cover "DO NOT PAINT"
