O Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 Can somebody please tell me what this black pipe is? Right below the faucet on the right-hand side? The house does have gas, but it's not a gas pipe is it? is it some kind of air gap to prevent water hammer? or am i way off base? Any help is appreciated.
Chad Fabry Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 Without a photo I can only surmise that it is a time/space interface wormhole from this universe to the next. If you think I'm off base, please post a photo.
O Posted April 26, 2008 Author Report Posted April 26, 2008 where the wall extends to the left in the picture, there is a jaccuzi tub on the orther side, then a sink ... but nothing really interesting directly on the other side. sorry about the picture
hausdok Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 Hi, Is the end of the pipe open or capped? I can't tell from the picture. If it's black pipe, did you consider the possibility that it might be a gas stub-out for an outside barbecue? ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike
O Posted April 26, 2008 Author Report Posted April 26, 2008 thanks for the reply. it is capped, but it is on the side of the house which would be a strange location for a gas connection and there is a gas connection in the back yard for a grill, so i don't think that's what it is ... any other ideas?
hausdok Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 Yeah, Pick up the phone, call the listing agent and ask him/her to ask the homeowner what it is. OT - OF!!! M.
Phillip Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 It looks to be a gas line. I have seen homes that the gas lines where run in the home and there was no gas tied into the house and that was be the stub out for the meter.
Mark P Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 It is to rest your foot on while washing the mud from you shoes, or tying up the dog while you wash him
hausdok Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 That actually makes sense to me. I was staring at that thing thinking that it might be to coil a hose up on but then I noticed that it was only a few courses off the ground. OT - OF!!! M.
O Posted April 26, 2008 Author Report Posted April 26, 2008 ok, so the gas meter is actually present on the same wall, but it's a good 10 to 15 yards away and there is an A/C unit between the two. you can see the meter in this picture (meant to show grains in the gutter)... so you think they could have just changed their mind about the location of the meter? Thanks for all the ideas so far ... my lack of understanding still scares me. Image Insert: 271.86 KB

I would just tell them ââ¬ÅI donââ¬â¢t know what it is, but I know it is not a problem, if youââ¬â¢re really interested you can try asking the current ownersââ¬
O Posted April 26, 2008 Author Report Posted April 26, 2008 that seems like an acceptable way to say i have no idea ... i'll run with it! thanks to everyone for all the help.
inspect4u Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 [:-party] Wow! I bet Mrs. Faucet is happy!!!!!!! Mike M
NewInspector Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Anything that centered on the faucet must have been a marvel of what we call "Yankee Engineering". Someone had a wife as meticulous as mine and needed a place to clean his boots. RDH
John Dirks Jr Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Could it be for a lawn sprinkler system that has yet to be installed?
charlieb Posted May 2, 2008 Report Posted May 2, 2008 Originally posted by AHI Could it be for a lawn sprinkler system that has yet to be installed? Unlikely. It's "best" practice to have a dedicated service for an irrigation (separate meter or t at the meter) main line. A backflow preventer is also needed.
