John Dirks Jr Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 This inquiry is about the inner trim on skylights. I see that it doesn't get painted and that it should have a poly coating for protection. Why poly and not paint? Does it come as part of the skylight assembly and is it already finished with a protective coating or does the installer have to apply the coating? I have seen them looking like they are unfinished wood a few times. Image Insert: 307.84 KB
kurt Posted April 25, 2008 Report Posted April 25, 2008 Velux come unfinished. They can be painted or varnished.
randynavarro Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 I don't worry about. Sometimes there's no trim. If people are looking up there, the show's not good enough.
RickSab Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 You got a nice one. Whoever installed that was a better than average installer. I haven't seen anything calling for poly.
hausdok Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 I wouldn't use any clear finish on it, I'd paint it. I've seen a lot of wood trim around skylights that's been sunburned black because it was left unprotected from sunlight for years and years. Leave it long enough and it will look like someone took a soldering iron and intentionally browned the wood with the thing. OT - OF!!! M.
kurt Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 I've got 6 of 'em (Velux lites) in my house. I use Interlux Schooner Varnish. Excellent UV resistance. Why cover up all that nice clear fir w/distasteful pigments? Wood is Good. Just gotta know what to do w/it. [:-idea] (i luv pickin' on Mr. O....[:-dev3])
hausdok Posted April 26, 2008 Report Posted April 26, 2008 Note to Mike B.: Is there a way to make Kurt's avatar fart? OT - OF!!! M.
