Lets say you're stuck in a house, on a deserted island, which gets very hot during the day, and very cold at night. Along comes an Aladdin's Lamp, and a Genie pops out, and grants you one wish.

You wish for a 2 stage variable speed 90 plus furnace, and a 16 SEER A/C. He asks you which brand, but only offers you Trane, or Carrier.

Which would you choose?

That's un-American.

You're supposed to follow the pack and spend it on beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets..oh yeah, score some illegal drugs too.

dumbest idea ever... 9+trillion in debt and doling out money to folks who barely contribute so they can spend on stuff that'll be in their bellies or landfills in 24 hours. That is after the check cashing services net 5%

Sorry, I'm a little jaded.

They're both equally good units. I'd choose the Carrier because the local tech who installs Carrier is better than the local tech who installs Trane. If it were the other way around, I'd install the Trane.

The installer is more important than the equipment.

Just don't try to use the money to pay down debt:

I'd wish for unlimited wishes....[;)]

But if I had to choose, I'd pick Carrier.

You likely are already aware of this, but the Trane name was purchased by American Standard/Rheem a few years back. Whether that is good, bad, or neutral, I don't know.

I hate Carrier. I can't say enough bad things about them. I've had multiple problems.

1) Broken blower mount. Twice.

2) Induction fan replaced. Twice

3) AC compressor (12 SEER, mid grade equipment) failed after 2 years. The new compressor cost me a grand in labor to change it out, and Carrier wouldn't authorize any local supplier to get me the goods. I had to wait for the part to come from their depot in Connecticut. 2 1/2 weeks.

Carrier sucks.

American Standard/Trane is some good stuff. The new stuff I see, I really like. Quiet.

The problem with these sorts of questions is that it's hard to say with certainty who makes "good" stuff today. The answer won't be truly known for several years. People are always asking me what brand of water heater or whatever to buy. Unfortunately, I can't tell them. All I can tell them is who made a good one 20 or so years ago! Designs are continually evolving and companies are merging; many changes are not for the better. This makes it hard to make assumptions about brand names based on past quality.

I, too, have had a bad experience with Carrier. However, due to being armed with knowledge about defective indoor coils circa 2000, I was able to get a lot of help from them in replacing the product. Do I love Carrier/Bryant? Absolutely not. They should not have released a product on the public WITHOUT proper testing first. I am not happy -- ever -- to be a guinea pig. Do I think most HVAC manufacturers (and manufacturers in general) do the same thing?

Yes.
