John Dirks Jr Posted April 12, 2008 Report Posted April 12, 2008 SEC looks a bit weathered huh? The anchors are pulling away and its being held only by the neighbors weather head anchor. One of the hots is rubbing on the neutral cable. Image Insert: 144.58 KB Image Insert: 121.55 KB
John Dirks Jr Posted April 13, 2008 Author Report Posted April 13, 2008 If the insulation wears through and the hot touched the neutral here, what could happen?

RickSab Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 I'm glad it not on my neighbors service. Will the downspout be a good enough ground?
RickSab Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 I guess I need to look up adding a photo? Sorry. It was a good one. Rick
hausdok Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 Hi Rick Rename your photo without any spaces, delete the URL you've posted and then repost it. OT - OF!!! M.
Bruce King Posted April 13, 2008 Report Posted April 13, 2008 A neighbor hit underground cables with a trackhoe and killed a transformer about 7 years ago. He never did say how much it cost him. I am guessing several thousand. Power was out for over a day. This would have been a more direct short than just some worn SE cables rubbing together but there is always the chance of the cables arc welding togther and drawing max current until the transformer winding opens.
John Dirks Jr Posted April 14, 2008 Author Report Posted April 14, 2008 Here is a wider angle so you can see how its hanging on by just the weather head anchor of the adjacent unit. They also run under the back of the gutter which makes me nervous. Image Insert: 139.69 KB Image Insert: 101.42 KB
fqp25 Posted April 14, 2008 Report Posted April 14, 2008 Aren't they kind of close to the operative windows as well? Frank

Frank I think that rule applies to the overhead wires, such as where the the connection between the service drop and SEC is. I could be wrong and if I am then someone will step in a slap me I'm sure.
inspectorchris Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Either way the light show is awsome to watch and usually does blow out the transformer Which by the way in this area cost 20-30,000 to replace.
RickSab Posted April 16, 2008 Report Posted April 16, 2008 Heres the picture of my neighbors new downspouts. They did listen and had the contractor back out to move it. They thought the only problem was that it drained on the sidewalk and the ice made it impassable. Image Insert: 959.9 KB
