Terence McCann Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Inspected a home built in 1874 today. Most of the exterior doors had the paint cracking in the small 2x2 square type of pattern. The realtor said that a home inspector once told her that this was a sign of lead paint. I replied that although I would think lead paint had been used in the home at some point the cracking pattern would most likely be do to lack of a primer base coat, improper exterior paint and weathering. Truth or urban legend on this pattern and lead paint? Thanks,
Jim Morrison Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Most everything you hear about lead paint is urban legend -especially from realtors. What'll they think of next?
hausdok Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Sounds like incompatible layers. Someone repainted the doors without sanding them down and re-priming them. The top layer is reacting with whatever is underneath. Lead paint tends to curl up as it peels off. OT - OF!!! M.
Chad Fabry Posted April 27, 2004 Report Posted April 27, 2004 Paint over shellac.. I bet the doors were grained originally.
