Inspectorjoe Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 This morning I had a 1963 ranch that had 3.5 inches of fiberglass batt attic insulation. Thrown/blown/placed on top of that is what at first glance looks like polystyrene pellets. It's not polystyrene, because when you rub it between your fingers, it turns to powder like UFFI. Can anyone identify this stuff? Image Insert: 161.31 KB Image Insert: 193.78 KB
Brandon Whitmore Posted March 16, 2008 Report Posted March 16, 2008 Looks like perlite to me too. They use it in greenhouses to mix in with potting soil, etc. (I don't think it has a high R- value, but could have just been lying around).
Inspectorjoe Posted March 16, 2008 Author Report Posted March 16, 2008 Bingo! Thanks Jim & Brandon. Perlite.net Now can anyone identify this product that I found in the same house? [] Image Insert: 208.21 KB
StevenT Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 It looks like Zinger's Asbestos Boiler Covering to me. Anyone can use it. Nowadays, there are newer similar products available that don't contain asbestos.
Bill Kibbel Posted March 17, 2008 Report Posted March 17, 2008 The product is mis-labeled. It sez boiler covering, but the guy in the pic is applying it to a furnace.
