What does this look like to you?

I am puzzled by these strange little round "orbs" stuck to the bottom of this hot water heater. I pushed on one and it crumbled like the disgusting egg sacks that spiders lay, maybe thats what is?

Feel free to comment on the rest of the junk in this photo as well. I am learning SO much from all you smart little inspectors!

The mud looking stuff is rust flaking off (look above the burner). I think you're spot on with the spider egg-sack theory.

The spider egg sacks that I've seen are squishy, not crumbly. Maybe these are toasted spider egg sacks?

I really have no idea.
