kenneth Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 How many watts would a headphone jack put out?

SonOfSwamp Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Not to be snarky, but assuming that you'll actually put the headphones on/in your ears, the watts don't matter nearly as much as the sound pressure level. There are a bazillion ways to figure up watts. You've got your average level, your peak level, your transients, etc. Simply put, if you just want to listen to music via headphones, buy a good set of headphones, plug 'em in, and turn up the volume to a level that's comfortable, but doesn't hurt your ears. If your ears ring after listening, you're doing damage. You can destroy the cilia in the ears with very low-powered phones or buds. WJ
Bain Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 And don't chew on your Ipod earbud cords 'cause they contain phthalates, according to Sanjay Gupta, CNN's medical watchdog. The Ipod itself is safe to ingest, apparently, though Greenpeace alleges the device contains excessively high levels of bromide. Where do these people find the time?
kenneth Posted November 14, 2007 Author Report Posted November 14, 2007 I was going to attach a 0.5 watt speaker to a headphone jack for a project involving and iPod shuffle
kenneth Posted November 14, 2007 Author Report Posted November 14, 2007 the frequency is between 19 Hz 18 kHz
Chad Fabry Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 You can destroy the cilia in the ears with very low-powered phones or buds. Oddly enough, women have the exact detrimental effect on my hearing. I'm almost deaf to female human voice frequencies. Cilia, I'm down on my knees, I'm beggin you please to let go. Please let go.
StevenT Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 I don't know about Headphone Jack, but I once saw a movie called Kangaroo Jack.
ozofprev Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Chad, REM is somewhat more current than Simon & Garfunkel. Still, that was a good tune and you get bonus points for clever use of cilia. Kenneth, REM had a popular song named "What's the frequency, Kenneth." Dan Rather
SonOfSwamp Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Originally posted by kenneth I was going to attach a 0.5 watt speaker to a headphone jack for a project involving and iPod shuffle You know you'll need two speakers, right? Because the output from the iPod is stereo. You'll have to sacrifice the cable from the headphone output, so you can direct left output to left speaker, and right output to right speaker. Or, just play the music through a set of headphones that aren't on somebody's head. WJ So, cilia, you're breaking apart, you're shaking my tympanic membranes...id="blue">
kurt Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 I did the whacko purchase of Sensaphonic custom ear inserts w/Schure E3's. It's one of my few extravagances. The benefit is absolutely incredible sound @ very low levels so there is no ear damage. These are the same folks that make the in ear monitors for all the rock stars.
AHI in AR Posted November 14, 2007 Report Posted November 14, 2007 Enough, already. This thread is getting cilia and cilia with each additional posting...including this one.
ozofprev Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 Oh Kevin, U2? Kurt - such a purchase is not necessarily extravagant. My father-in-law just spent $3,000 on one hearing aid. If your purchase keeps your ears working, then it was a very smart buy. Like Walter said, it's about more than watts. Cilia think ya can dance...

ozofprev Posted November 15, 2007 Report Posted November 15, 2007 Kevin, When you give up on the speaker (non-powered, I assume), a mini Y jack with phono plugs connecting the headphone plug to a stereo sounds great!
