John Dirks Jr Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 On masonry chimneys it is said that the counter flashing should be "let" into the mortar joints about 1/2" or so. If it wasn't done properly when the chimney was first built, how would you go about making the repair? Do you have to use some type of masonry saw to cut slots in the mortar?
fqp25 Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 On a home inspector's train of thought, it should be refered to a reputable, (hopefully qualified) contractor, to make the necessary repairs. If it was yourself; well, I wouldn't recommend a wood blade in a Sawzall. Diamond tip blade would probably be best.

Neal Lewis Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 John, the cut into the masonry is known as a reglet.
n/a30 Posted September 23, 2007 Report Posted September 23, 2007 Yes, good advice all round. A angle grinder can be very handy for other fixes.
