On masonry chimneys it is said that the counter flashing should be "let" into the mortar joints about 1/2" or so.

If it wasn't done properly when the chimney was first built, how would you go about making the repair? Do you have to use some type of masonry saw to cut slots in the mortar?

On a home inspector's train of thought, it should be refered to a reputable, (hopefully qualified) contractor, to make the necessary repairs.

If it was yourself; well, I wouldn't recommend a wood blade in a Sawzall. Diamond tip blade would probably be best.

A 4" angle grinder with a diamond masonry saw blade works nicely.
