Mark P Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Is fiberglass insulation combustible? Should it be pulled away from this fireplace flue? It has been like this since 1983, but since Iââ¬â¢m not sure, I think Iââ¬â¢ll recommend it be pulled away. I have seen in newer construction a warning label on metal furnace flues indicating insulation should not touch. What say you? Image Insert: 51.46 KB
hausdok Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Nope, it's not combustible. It's glass! I've seen that thousands of times and have never found where it's been an issue. OT - OF!!! M.
ozofprev Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Heck with the fiberglass - how far is it from that wood?
Mike Lamb Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 I'm not sure why (heat conductivity?) but combustibles AND building insulation are not allowed within 1" of b-vents. I've failed my way to success. -Thomas Edison
Mark P Posted September 14, 2007 Author Report Posted September 14, 2007 Good point, Gary. Sometimes I miss the forest for the trees.
inspector57 Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 Most modern metal flues call for 2" clearance to insulation and combustibles. The pipe needs the air to keep the pipe cool, won't work as the manufacturer intended if you bury the pipe in insulation. Jim
