hausdok Posted September 8, 2007 Report Posted September 8, 2007 Bois d'arc tree trunks made great piers back in mid- to late 1920s;... And ... they're still working. Many thanks to Nolan KienitzPlano (Dallas), TX
AHI in AR Posted September 27, 2007 Report Posted September 27, 2007 I'll see your tree stump and raise you a chunk of concrete block, a few 2X4's and 2X6's...and a 1X6 just for good measure! Image Insert: 403.37 KB
willpope Posted October 5, 2007 Report Posted October 5, 2007 I lived in Dallas and had Bois d'arc piers and joists. someone left an unused joist under there and I took it out and used it...but I went through two carbide saw blades, and it sent sparks the whole time, like metal on metal... kurt Posted October 6, 2007 Report Posted October 6, 2007 What would Bois d'arc wood be in "english"? I've seen similar (old, completely functional) posts out of larch, black locust, and old growth white cedar. Is it like any of those?
hausdok Posted October 6, 2007 Author Report Posted October 6, 2007 I'm guessing he's referring to ironwood. It's plentiful in Mexico and parts of texas. I remember reading an article about it once in Popular Woodworking, Fine Woodworking, Wood magazine, or some such. ONE TEAM - ONE FIGHT!!! Mike

Kurt and all, Here is a URL for likely more information than you want RE: Bois d'arc tree. Some of Jim's and Chad's comments appear to be the same product. http://www.mitzenmacher.net/blog/?p=589
