dtontarski Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 Can anyone educate me on this type of siding? When was it popular Image Insert: 138.81 KB Image Insert: 134.02 KB? Would it contain asbestos, or does it pre-date the popularity of asbestos in building materials? If asbestos - would it be friable? This was installed on an 1850 built home that I guess they got tired of painting. Thanks
Jim Morrison Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 In MA, we see it around installed just before, during and after WWII. I haven't ever heard of it containing a significant amount of asbestos, but then, I've never had it tested, either.
Les Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 Same as Jim M in Michigan. They are just t lock shingles and I don't know them to have asbestos. Even if they did, it would not be friable under normal conditions.
hausdok Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 I agree with Les. In order to ingest asbestos fiber from that stuff, you'd probably have to grind it up and then chemically separate the asbestos from the asphalt that's encapsulating it and then snort it directly. How likely is that? OT - OF!!! M.
Les Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 Mike, Do you use mineral spirits to wipe the black stuff out of your nose? The substrate for these is usually 4" wood siding with no insulation in the wall cavities. Then again, I have seen many with just 1" board sheathing, 15lb felt and shingles. They seem to last forever fastened straight up like that.
kurt Posted August 2, 2007 Report Posted August 2, 2007 I thought they were T-locks too, until I looked closer. Aren't they just basic "slates"? They last forever in a vertical application, or almost forever. I see similar product all the time from the 30's.
Les Posted August 3, 2007 Report Posted August 3, 2007 Kurt, you are right. After looking at them again I saw the nail pattern.
