elwood556 Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Can anyone tell me whats wrong with this setup. The white pipe comes off the kitchen sink, the orange appliance on the left is a food disposal unit. Thanks.
Brandon Whitmore Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Backslope in drain pipe. Flex drain pipe materials improper. P trap (if there is one) is too high at the disposal side (or missing P trap). Is that the dishwasher drain hose running through the cabinet base?
chicago Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Yes it is.. and in my opinion needs to be bracketed up past the bottom of the basin. Water line for the icemaker follows the same path.
Bill Kibbel Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 That's not double trapping - that's 2 traps on 1 arm.
Brandon Whitmore Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Bill, Could you explain the problem with 2 traps on one arm?
StevenT Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Good eyesight, I didn't see where they were T'd to the drain line. I thought one ran into the other.
chicago Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 You were fooled because it is not PVC. Come to think of it shouldn't that be a y connection instead of a TEE.
StevenT Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Naw, I'm just tired. Besides work today, I got called to do an emergency inspection on a repo. A fellow I know is going to an auction tomorrow. The house was ransaked and appeared to be abandoned. I got lots of disgusting photos.
chicago Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Put em here or AR when you get some rest. Have a good story and you get star.
Bill Kibbel Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Originally posted by Brandon Whitmore Bill, Could you explain the problem with 2 traps on one arm? - Cuz da book says it's a no-no. - Probably because one sink fill of water draining might siphon the other trap.
Brandon Whitmore Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Thanks Bill I just like having good answers for the WHY when clients ask. Many of my clients couldn't care less if something is wrong if they understand why it is wrong.

Install a sign for it with an arrow showing the proper direction. The corrugated trap is prohibited. - Jim Katen, Oregon
chicago Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 I like corrugated as it gives me the first clue I will find DIY plumbing.

chicago Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Sounds like it was to far away from the sink, and they improvised.More than likely it is clamped to the black hose with a piece of galvinized half inch pipe and two hose clamps. This is common but green hose has a tendency to leak as it does not have the flexability to adjust to the pipe coupling. The part I can see looks like a screw on which is bad.Think of all the times they leak outside. I would have recommended it be replaced .
Les Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 Everything above, except it is a disposer and not disposal. Someday I will dig up the letter I got from ISE reminding me, on penalty of death, they own the word. ya ya ya
John Dirks Jr Posted July 19, 2007 Report Posted July 19, 2007 After the P trap on the right side the drain goes uphill before turning out through the wall. That is wrong, isnt it?

elwood556 Posted July 19, 2007 Author Report Posted July 19, 2007 Originally posted by inspecthistoric That's not double trapping - that's 2 traps on 1 arm. yeah, i believe they are in parallel not series. double trapping is when you have two drains each with a trap and the one goes into the other.
JerryM Posted July 28, 2007 Report Posted July 28, 2007 How come I can't see any details, photos, drawings, etc. of that sink's drain lines?
Bill Kibbel Posted July 28, 2007 Report Posted July 28, 2007 Originally posted by JerryM How come I can't see any details, photos, drawings, etc. of that sink's drain lines? Whatchu talkin' bout? Everyone else can see it! You've had enough for tonight, Jerry. [:-hypnoti
