John Dirks Jr Posted July 10, 2007 Report Posted July 10, 2007 An inspector can collect data before he or she gets to the property. How about soil conditions data? Are there any sources of mapping or whatnot that could show different soil types in specific areas? If you could get this info in advance and it revealed expansive soil types in the area of the job it would help raise your attention to the possibility of related foundation problems. I searched around on google a bit but my search terms fell short of finding anything yet.

Call your local USDA office and ask about "soil surveys." They used to be free for the asking. - Jim Katen, Oregon
Bill01 Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 You might also try the county extension office.
JEuriech Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 In Arizona, our information comes from the Natural Resources Conservation Service. Maybe your state has the same set up. http://www.az.nrcs.usda.gov/technical/s ... swell.html Jeff Euriech Peoria Arizona
