Chris Bernhardt Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Can ladders be legally used to access habitable space? Chris, Oregon
ozofprev Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 As the only access? Only for tree-houses. Originally posted by Chris Bernhardt Can ladders be legally used to access habitable space? Chris, Oregon
Chris Bernhardt Posted March 26, 2007 Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 Inspected this house this weekend built in 1926. Somebody just remodeled the attic and even built on a nice dormer. The room otherwise appeared to qualify as habitable space but there was no legal way to get to it. Chris, Oregon
hausdok Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 Hi, I see them every once in a while equipped with what are essentially ship's ladders. They're usually playrooms for children but I had an A-frame house the other day that had been built that way with a ship's ladder to the sleeping loft. Around here, the local code guys seem to approve them for such limited applications. OT - OF!!! M.
kurt Posted March 26, 2007 Report Posted March 26, 2007 I wish ships ladders were "legal". They're the coolest thing.
Jim Katen Posted March 27, 2007 Report Posted March 27, 2007 Originally posted by Chris Bernhardt Can ladders be legally used to access habitable space? Chris, Oregon I believe that the Oregon Building Codes Division issued an interpretation on this one and said no, there has to be a stairway. ctgo4it Posted June 6, 2007 Report Posted June 6, 2007 out of curiosity, do these attic rooms have windows. Do they have/need 2 forms of egress, or is this not required?
