Konrad Posted February 10, 2004 Report Posted February 10, 2004 I just had a rather interesting talk with several others here at work regarding the type of sheetrock being specified for use with ceramic wall tile over it's face. Does anyone have a reference or resource for any tile manufacturer's requirements or US Gyp comments on the correct (or incorrect) selection of gypsum wall board underneath ceramic wall tile? (this goes without saying that cement board would be best, but the conversation only relates to gyp products) Any help is appreciated.

I thought it had to be "greenboard", the oxymoronic water resistant drywall(?).
Renron Posted March 4, 2004 Report Posted March 4, 2004 Greenboard if it is in the bathroom or where moisture may be present. White sheetrock works too. Greenboard won't soak up as much moisture from the thinset or mastic. Cement "type" backerboard is always best. Ron
Danny Pritchard Posted March 4, 2004 Report Posted March 4, 2004 What is the application? Is it on a shower/tub wall or a wall that never gets wet.Greenboard is the recommended use at wet walls. On non wet walls I have placed ceramic tile tile on regular sheet rock with no problem.I used a mastic type adhesive versus thinset.
gadget Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 the only difference is that cement board absorbs the moistor and the green board dosnt absorb so fast of moister and that regular rock just absorbs all of it and stays wetter longer, so use cement board to let the bathroom breath
