It looks like the same format as Kenmore which is a letter followed by 7 or 8 digits. the 2 digits after the letter are the year. 00 = 2000

You can confirm with the date stamped inside the TP relief valve handle.

OP- no date on TPRV handle, the 00 I was guessing that also but there was another sticker on the tank about "complies to CSA 2006 standards". Yes I'm kicking myself for not getting more pics! I know I'll hear it from the brethren.

The year and week of manufacture are shown by the serial number, making it quick and simple to determine the age of a water heater. This information is printed on the manufacturer's label that is attached to the unit's body.
