Bug Damage to Tree

What kind of bug will leave this kind of trail? Termites? Most of the bark was gone and the marks all looked mostly on the surface.

Not termites. It's from the larvae of one of the wood boring beetles. The exact type depends on the tree (red oak borer, locust borer, ash borer, etc.) Bark beetles attack several types of trees.

Looks like a representation of the foot path of my wife when she goes to the mall. My path would be a straight line to the other end.
