MPdesign Posted January 31, 2016 Report Posted January 31, 2016 I have some compressors with a lot of surface rust. These are only 8 years old. Should I correct this or should I not worry about it. This is about 30 miles from the ocean. These are copeland scroll 25 ton compressors. This is just the bottom of the compressor and it is the worst area. mjr6550 Posted January 31, 2016 Report Posted January 31, 2016 That is quite a bit of corrosion. Generally you want to remove most of the rust and then prime with a zinc-rich primer, then paint. But with that much corrosion and the location, it would be difficult to do it properly. So, it couldn't hurt, but I doubt it will help much.
Marc Posted February 1, 2016 Report Posted February 1, 2016 I've never seen that much corrosion at any age. I'll bet there was an error in the paint schedule on the assembly line. If I'm not mistaken, that was the first year that 410A compressors came out. The warranty expire yet? Marc
Marc Posted February 1, 2016 Report Posted February 1, 2016 Maybe check with manufacturer, send the photo and serial number if you can still make it out. Might lead to something. Marc
Rob Amaral Posted February 1, 2016 Report Posted February 1, 2016 Nasty... probably a manufacturing/paint defect as mentioned above.. Almost looks like the compressor was 'sitting' in a flooded area...
