ghentjr Posted October 20, 2015 Report Posted October 20, 2015 I took this photo a few days ago as I was traveling. Yes, it is a lead pipe. It was used to supply a town in Italy. This was a branch water supply pipe for Pompei. The houses also had clay pipes for indoor toilets throughout the town which led to a large septic field. The town was destroyed in 79ad and excavation began in the 1870's. Quite advanced civilization regarding sanitation and water supply. Click to Enlarge 75.42 KB
John Kogel Posted October 21, 2015 Report Posted October 21, 2015 That lead is amazingly well preserved, from being buried in ash I imagine.
kurt Posted October 21, 2015 Report Posted October 21, 2015 It's well preserved because it's lead, not because of the ash. Lead doesn't break down. OTOH, Ghent may have found the murder weapon used by Colonel Mustard, in the Library.
ghentjr Posted October 21, 2015 Author Report Posted October 21, 2015 Just one other of the many wonders of Pompei. Check out the faucet. Remember, the town was covered in volcanic ash in 79ad. Seems they had some good plumbing back then. Click to Enlarge 124.54 KB
DavidAranowski Posted December 1, 2015 Report Posted December 1, 2015 I will surely take a trip to Pompeii one day to examine their history up close and personal. You have to love what these people were able to do 2000 years ago.
