Mike Lamb Posted September 14, 2015 Report Posted September 14, 2015 Would you call this old (rag wrapped) Romex, knob and tube, or both? Click to Enlarge 60.66 KB Click to Enlarge 44.08 KB Click to Enlarge 61.99 KB Click to Enlarge 56.8 KB
kurt Posted September 14, 2015 Report Posted September 14, 2015 It's the loom. It's the thick wrap on K&T.
caryseidner Posted September 14, 2015 Report Posted September 14, 2015 I see both in the junction box, but the other pics are knob & tube.
Marc Posted September 14, 2015 Report Posted September 14, 2015 I side with Kurt. It's what we recognize as K&T but this installation has the loom installed in at least some places. Loom is that era's version of greenfield. Loom doesn't qualify it as a different wiring method IMHO. Marc
Bill Kibbel Posted September 14, 2015 Report Posted September 14, 2015 Near a connection to a box or fixture the 3" separation from the hot to neutral is not possible so an additional protective woven sleeve (loom) should be installed from the last knob.
kurt Posted September 14, 2015 Report Posted September 14, 2015 I usually see loom at boxes or where the stuff takes the turn up into a wall. I unequivocally tell folks to take it all out nowadays. I don't see it nearly as much as I used to.
