Mark P Posted August 9, 2015 Report Posted August 9, 2015 You should submit that to the ASHI reporter.
tim5055 Posted August 10, 2015 Report Posted August 10, 2015 They were probably trying to protect it from this - Michigan house explodes after car hits gas meter
kurt Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 No plan to it. Chicago has a lot of these sorts of goofy meter placements. Old houses, built before gas service, gas arrives during the Depression so run the pipe in somewhere and place the meters wherever they'd fit, then move them around during some weird Depression era remodeling to turn the old frame house into a 2 flat or similar rental. This one is particularly odd, though. Never seen one in a shower.
John Kogel Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 My guess is the meter was fine in the unfinished basement before they built the bathroom around it.
Mike Lamb Posted August 11, 2015 Author Report Posted August 11, 2015 It's a 2 flat on a non-accessible crawlspace. The upstairs unit had the same meter location. The bathrooms are in the middle of the building. Very odd indeed.
kurt Posted August 11, 2015 Report Posted August 11, 2015 Those old dumps usually had the mechanicals come up in the middle of the building; run it through the crawlspace to get to the wet wall.
Brandon Whitmore Posted August 12, 2015 Report Posted August 12, 2015 Mike, Would you be willing to send me a copy of that picture to show some guys at work? They'd get a kick out of it.
