Erby Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 What do y'all think about front steps being supported by a 2x4 screwed to the brick? No signs of it being secured to the concrete at the bottom. Yes, I know they cut the stringer ugly. Click to Enlarge 62.35 KB Click to Enlarge 48.42 KB Click to Enlarge 41.74 KB
kurt Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 I think it blows. It'll hold up fine until it doesn't. Note to Erby.....tone down the B4U Close a little bit. Just a thought.
inspector57 Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 Is it brick veneer or solid? As you know, brick veneer is not a structural element, so I would not be happy if it is veneer.
Marc Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 If it's a veneer: The steps are supported at the top by brickwork. This brickwork is intended as a cosmetic item only and isn't thick enough to absorb structural loads. You should install a couple posts between the slab and the ledger (that 2X4 screwed into the brickwork) to take the load off of the brick before it cracks. Marc
Chad Fabry Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 Tap Cons are not a rated fastener for structural connections.
John Kogel Posted July 17, 2015 Report Posted July 17, 2015 Besides all of the above, the wood isn't even painted.
Erby Posted July 17, 2015 Author Report Posted July 17, 2015 Kurt, I'm so used to it being there it didn't register that the font size changed drastically somehow when I got the new computer a while back. Thanks for pointing that out. It was supposed to look like this. Click to Enlarge 51.82 KB
