Mike Lamb
I would think that this vent box inserted in the chimney would create unwanted friction for the gas products of the furnace and water heater. The vent box might be as old as the house which is about 60 years. I saw no drafting problems whatsoever from the 15-year-old furnace and water heater. Would you include this in your report? kurt
No. They're everywhere in 30's and 40's houses.

kurt
There's usually a cover on them. They should be covered, I guess.....lots of air rolls out of the house if they're left open. They don't do anything to hurt draft, though. They're almost always associated with a metal liner.
