Jim Katen Posted April 27, 2014 Report Posted April 27, 2014 I don't know the name. All of the fissures seem to be on the double-thick, laminated, areas. If that's the case, they're unlikely to have any effect on the performance of the shingles.
Erby Posted April 27, 2014 Author Report Posted April 27, 2014 As you noted, the cracks are all on the double laminate section. Seen it before quite a few times several years ago, just can't remember the name.
Ben H Posted April 27, 2014 Report Posted April 27, 2014 Horizon. Still lots of houses around here that have them, including my own.
Bill Kibbel Posted April 27, 2014 Report Posted April 27, 2014 There's also another brand with the same issue. I can't remember the name. It's a 3-tab shingle with an "applique" - an additional layer of unreinforced asphalt and granules added in spots to create a decorative, dimensional enhancement. The manufacturers state the "map" cracks are cosmetic.
John Dirks Jr Posted April 27, 2014 Report Posted April 27, 2014 Pabco is another one. http://www.ho25settlement.com/faq.php3
Robert Jones Posted April 27, 2014 Report Posted April 27, 2014 I see quite a bit of the Pabco shingles, from the mid 90's, that have that issue.
Ben H Posted April 27, 2014 Report Posted April 27, 2014 Must be a region thing, never heard of Pabco.
Bill Kibbel Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 Must be a region thing, never heard of Pabco. They were only distributed way out West.

Jim Katen Posted April 28, 2014 Report Posted April 28, 2014 Must be a region thing, never heard of Pabco. They were only distributed way out West. And that some how applies to Kentucky? Please elaborate. I take it to mean that the problem isn't limited to CertainTeed, but spans a range of manufacturers across different parts of the country.
Rob Amaral Posted April 29, 2014 Report Posted April 29, 2014 From horse's mouth (Certainteed rep here at plant in Norwood MA) "Cracking in the 'applique' (like that) is 'ok'.. (Versus 'cracking through the reinforcement' (the fiberglass-mat). "It's considered OK in the industry and by the manufacturer. An aesthetic anomaly"
