What is the grey box?

The first photo shows the conductors as they exit the main panel into the crawlspace. The conductors leading to the right are shown further downstream in the second photo, then lead to the grey box in the third photo. This box is laying on the surface of the crawl space. Any idea what this grey box is?

I would have investigated a little more and perhaps taken better photos, but this was not a home inspection and I was invited to leave by a not so friendly copperhead who had taken up residence near the box.

My guess is that it's used as a big ol' junction box. Not exactly lovely work, is it?

Wiring on bare dirt, no, we don't do that here, not for long anyway.

A big junction box installed on its back on the ground by an amateur. [:-party]

that is a PVC junction box.

I want to see the copperhead, Where's the picture of that ?

Wow what a mess. As others have said the wiring and junction box should be supported off the ground. I would hate to be the rookie electrician they send in for this one.
