MPdesign Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 Looking at the attached copper joint. It appears that it is starting to develop some leaks. What are your thoughts on this? Is this impending failure? How long do they have? Or is this not that big of a problem? Click to Enlarge 29.42 KB
Jim Katen Posted January 7, 2014 Report Posted January 7, 2014 What am I supposed to be looking at? I see a valve that might have a little leaking from the stem - no big deal, and I see some soldered joints that look fine.
stubrooks Posted January 10, 2014 Report Posted January 10, 2014 White or yellowish-white gunk at solder joints indicate to me that there is a pinhole leak in the solder joint. I also see that often in cheap brass castings made in China. The blue-green on the pipe can mean flux wasn't cleaned off and the residual acid corroded the copper for a while. However, on a valve and it's at or just below the gland nut it can mean the gland packing has failed and the valve is leaking at the stem or the gland nut is loose.
MPdesign Posted January 10, 2014 Author Report Posted January 10, 2014 I am worried that whitish at the copper joint are the start of pinhole leaks. I am just now learning about these and seeing more of these. Any more insights and thoughts would be appreciated.
