The original reason it was done is not even really applicable anymore. I say we ditch it.

We have a bonfire most years on Solstice or close to it, for all the good pagan reasons. Saturday the high was 74 or 75, today is high in mid 40's.

Anyway, all the best wishes we have been making are carried on the wind by our Tibetan prayer flags to all the beings they manage to reach, as well as the electronic ones cast here.
