Light tubes are leaking light

These light tubes are leaking light into the attic. If the tubes were wrapped with foil, would the light downstairs in the living space be brighter?

My clients thought maybe it would be and it made for a lively discussion. I thought a reflective surface was the norm for these things, but we see new stuff every day.

It was quite bright and pleasant in the attic and I was careful not to say they were leaking. But they were. []

That junk on the roof is lichen, moss, algae. It is like a little roof garden up there.

Yes.

See them like that all the time. Doesn't seem to be an issue. The lichen is. It's turning that roof into lunch.

I would expect a light tube manufacturer to try for optimum efficiency, that's all.
