rlskfoster Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 It looks like they just attached the main support with the nails used to hang the rafters. What is the correct method. Lag bolts? I wondered how far apart would be adequate. Thanks, Buster Download Attachment: Smith5 018.jpg 72.55 KB
Chad Fabry Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 I'm assuming that this is a shed roof with no shear walls. If that's the case the ledger should be bolted or lagged to existing framing. The bolt schedule would vary with anticipated wind loads, snow loads etc, but you'd be surprised at how many fasteners this application may call for. JLC had a very good article about a year ago (use the search feature) on attaching decks to homes, which is what this is albeit with less live load.
rlskfoster Posted September 13, 2005 Author Report Posted September 13, 2005 Yes it is a shed roof. I wanted to be able to back up my report of improper installation with more than "that ain't right"[:-thumbd]. I will go to JLC and research. Thanks Chad, Buster
JEuriech Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 Buster, We are currently using the 2003 IRC in my area. The following PDF shows what is required in Peoria, AZ. Hope it helps. http://www.peoriaaz.com/building/Docs/p ... CARPRT.pdf Jeff Euriech Peoria Arizona
JEuriech Posted September 13, 2005 Report Posted September 13, 2005 Buster, I'm curious, are those rafters 2x4's? In my area the minimum size would be 2x6. I assume that this may have been a homeowner add on? Jeff Euriech Peoria, Arizona
